Basketball Bundesliga: Bamberg Baskets overrun Rostock in the second quarter

Bamberg Baskets recorded its second home win in three days in the catch-up game on the third matchday. The Amiel players produced a strong second period to pull 93:83 ahead after 40 minutes.

The main reason for the victory was the Bamberg team's improved rebounding. The home side snapped up 18 offensive rebounds and scored 20 points from second chances. The visitors snapped up five offensive rebounds without scoring a point. Bamberg also impressed with such strong defending, especially in the second quarter, that Rostock, which has the third-best offense in the league, only managed two lay-ups and two free throws in Bamberg's basket. The crowd of around 3,500 fans cheered the Bamberg team on to a 49:33 lead at half-time. However, Bamberg lost its quick 17:7 lead after five minutes with a run of 2:14. Even the highest lead did not last long due to carelessness and Rostock closed the gap to 70:63. Top scorer Zach Copeland drained three threes and Bamberg pulled 85:66 ahead. Apart from Copeland, co-top scorer Adrian Nelson also impressed with 15 points. Center EJ Onu had a fine touch with six buckets and 12 points, while Justin Gray, Malik Johnson and Trey Woodbury also scored in double figures. With such balanced offensive statistics, Bamberg is difficult to predict.

Head Coach Oren Amiel (Bamberg Baskets): "Rebounds have been our weak point so far. We've worked on that: We grabbed 84 percent of our defensive rebounds against Rostock; I'd set a target of 70%. The twelve turnovers hurt us and, in the end, you could see that we're still too inexperienced a team. We didn't play perfectly in offense but scored over 90 points again."

On Saturday, December 2, 2023, the Bamberg Baskets want to continue their winning streak and record their third successive victory at BG Göttingen. Tip-off in the Sparkassen Arena is at 6.30 pm.
