Coburg
BBC Coburg continues its winning streak
After a tough start, BBC Coburg fought its way back into the game against strong Fraport Skyliners Juniors Frankfurt and brought the favorites to their knees to win 84:73 (43:38) thanks to a huge power-packed performance. As a result, Coburg remains in contention for a playoff berth in the BARMER ProB South 2nd German Basketball League.
There was little to indicate that BBC would chalk up another home win in the opening spell. The visitors quickly built a 14:4 lead and caught the nervous Coburg team on the wrong foot. However, the tables would turn quickly and for good: The home side produced an inspirational run of 24 points without reply to wrest the momentum impressively and drained shots in the Skyliners’ hoop despite its players being fouled on various occasions.
Yet the club from Hesse, whose key players had helped beat Braunschweig in the top German league the day before, refused to give up and fought its way back into the encounter, above all through its center Armin Trtovac, who ended up with 20 points and 14 rebounds. In particular, the visitors’ size advantage in just about all positions made life difficult for BBC Coburg. The home side’s lead dwindled to five points at half time lead (43:38).
After the restart, Frankfurt picked up where it had left off and tied the scores at 45:45 in the 23rd minute through a bucket from beyond the arc by Freudenberg and a slam-dunk on a fast break by Clarance. However, that really aroused the fighting spirit of the club from Upper Franconia. Spurred on by Chase Adams, who produced an outstanding display in offense and defense, Christopher Wolf and Dino Dizdarevic, who put one Frankfurt player after the other at risk of fouling out thanks to his drives to the bucket, the team of Head Coach Ulf Schabacker gradually fought its way back into the game and had built a double-digit advantage again by midway through the final period (74:64 in the 36th minute). The home side did not relinquish that lead to the end and was able to celebrate its third home win in a row in front of just under 900 enthusiastic fans.
