Dominik Dinkel and Michael Teufel finished the AvD Niederbayern Rally in the Brose Ford Fiesta Rally2 with an impressive overall victory. The rally served the duo as preparation for the upcoming Kumrovec Rally in Croatia, a round of the Mitropa Rally Cup.
After the route inspection began in sunshine, a sudden thunderstorm shortly before the start made for difficult conditions on the special stages in the Bavarian Forest. Dinkel and Teufel opted for rain tires - a wise choice, as it turned out.
The Franconian team was looking forward to the duel with local heroes Maximilian and Lisa Koch (Toyota GR Yaris) and Raffael Sulzinger and Lisa Kiefer (Ford Fiesta). However, the race came to an abrupt end for the rivals in the very first stage: the Koch duo left the track shortly before the finish, while Sulzinger and Kiefer retired with a technical defect. Dinkel and Teufel, on the other hand, completed a faultless rally and set all six fastest times.
“Our Fiesta from the Austrian team ZM-Racing ran like Swiss clockwork, so we were able to concentrate fully on driving. We switched to dry tires at the halfway point and enjoyed the drive on these fast but demanding tracks,” said the winners after the race. Dinkel added: “As I am only driving a short program this year, the Niederbayern Rally was the perfect preparation for the Kumrovec Rally. Last year, we finished second overall in Croatia and are looking forward to taking part again.”
