Davis Cup: Krawietz and Pütz Secure Final Round Qualification

On Saturday, September 13, 2025, tennis professionals Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz achieved a crucial victory for the German Davis Cup team in Tokyo. In a convincing doubles match, they defeated the Japanese hosts Yosuke Watanuki and Takeru Yuzuki 6–3, 7–6 (7–4). With this win, they secured Germany’s early qualification for the Davis Cup final round in Bologna.
The first set was largely smooth for the duo. Krawietz and Pütz dominated with powerful serves and confident net play. An early break was enough to take the set 6–3. The second set was much more competitive: the Japanese team improved, backed by the home crowd, and repeatedly put the German team under pressure. The most dramatic moment came when Krawietz and Pütz had to fend off three set points at 0–40 – a key turning point in the match. In the subsequent tiebreak, they showed nerves of steel, won eleven points in a row, and finally converted their fifth match point to win 7–6 (7–4).
Statistically, the German team was superior in almost every area: they saved seven out of nine break points, while the Japanese team failed to defend any of the three against them. Precise return play and excellent coordination at the net also made a decisive difference.
With the doubles win, Germany led 3–0 – the remaining two singles matches did not need to be played. The day before, Jan-Lennard Struff had defeated Yoshihito Nishioka, and Yannick Hanfmann had won against Shintaro Mochizuki. Notably, the team once again had to do without Alexander Zverev, who continues to opt out of Davis Cup participation.
Attention now turns to the final round, which will take place from November 18 to 23, 2025, in Bologna. After reaching the semifinals last year, the goal is clear: Germany aims to reach the final this time – or even win the title. With a well-coordinated doubles team like Krawietz/Pütz and solid singles performances from Struff and Hanfmann, the chances are looking promising.
