Last Friday, German doubles specialists Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz faced the French duo Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open in Rome. In a thrilling and hard-fought match, the Germans were ultimately defeated 4–6, 6–3, 7–10 in the match tiebreak.

The first set did not go well for Krawietz and Pütz. Doumbia and Reboul played aggressively and capitalized on their chances, securing the set 6–4. In the second set, the Germans significantly improved. With better serving and a stronger presence at the net, they managed to win the set 6–3 and push the match into a decisive tiebreak. There, the contest remained evenly matched, but in the crucial moments, the French team showed slightly more composure and edged out the win 10–7.

Despite the loss, Krawietz and Pütz delivered a solid performance overall. Especially in the second set, they demonstrated why they are among the world’s top doubles teams. Their coordination was strong, but in the tiebreak, they lacked the final precision needed to turn the match around. Already on Tuesday, May 20, the German duo faces their next important match: at the German Open in Hamburg, they will meet the American pair Evan King and Christian Harrison in the round of 16. The Americans are considered a well-coordinated but beatable team. Krawietz and Pütz can count on the support of the home crowd in Hamburg and are well-acquainted with the conditions at the Rothenbaum. If they maintain solid service games and play aggressively at the net, they have a good chance of reaching the quarterfinals and taking the next step toward the title.
